WHERE IS OHRID?
Ohrid is a picturesque town located in the southwestern part of North Macedonia, nestled on the shores of Lake Ohrid, one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes. One of Europe's most hidden gems, the town is known for its rich history, stunning natural beauty, and cultural significance, often referred to as the "Jerusalem of the Balkans" due to its numerous churches and monasteries. Ohrid is a UNESCO World Heritage site, offering visitors a unique blend of ancient Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman influences.

Imagine a stunning lake as clear as any in Switzerland, surrounded by picturesque mountains and ancient architecture, but without the crowds of tourists that you would typically find in more popular European destinations. North Macedonia remains one of Europe’s least-visited countries, therefore this destination retains its serene charm, with very cheap prices and very welcoming locals. This makes Ohrid an ideal getaway for a peaceful weekend of relaxation, whether you're boating on the lake, exploring its UNESCO-listed sites, or simply unwinding by the lake. For travellers seeking a unique, off-the-beaten-path experience, Ohrid is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of mainstream tourism.
WHEN SHOULD YOU VISIT OHRID?
The best time to visit Ohrid is during the spring and early autumn months, from April to June and September to October. During this time, the weather is pleasantly mild, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), making it ideal for exploring the town’s historic sites, hiking the surrounding hills, or enjoying the peaceful waters of Lake Ohrid. These months also offer fewer visitors than usual, allowing you to experience the destination at a slower pace. While summer (July and August) can bring warmer temperatures and more visitors, it’s still an excellent time for those looking to swim or boat on the lake. Winter, on the other hand, offers a quieter, more contemplative atmosphere, perfect for those seeking a winter retreat away from the busier European destinations. Regardless of when you visit, Ohrid’s charm remains timeless, but spring and fall will give you the best balance of pleasant weather and relaxed surroundings.
HOW LONG SHOULD YOU SPEND IN OHRID?
For most travellers, we believe a weekend is the perfect amount of time to explore Ohrid and soak in its charm. With two to three days, you can comfortably visit the town's main attractions. However, from our experience, we’d highly recommend adding an extra day to simply relax by the lake. Ohrid’s charm has a way of making you want to slow down and savor every moment, and we found that an additional day allowed us to fully unwind and soak in the serene beauty of the surroundings. We spent four days in this peaceful haven, but honestly, we could have easily stayed longer. Whether it was the tranquil lake views, the quiet streets, or the timeless atmosphere, Ohrid had a way of making us feel right at home. Be prepared—once you arrive, it’s hard not to fall in love with this hidden gem.
HOW TO GET TO OHRID
Getting to Ohrid is relatively easy, though it may require a bit of planning, as it’s one of Europe’s more off-the-beaten-path destinations. For those traveling from parts of Europe, flying into Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, is often a good option, as it’s about a 2.5-hour drive to Ohrid. There is an airport in Ohrid, however, there are not many airlines who fly this route frequently. From Skopje, you can either rent a car, take a bus, or arrange a private transfer. The drive is scenic, passing through rolling hills and small villages, adding to the journey’s charm. If you prefer train travel, there is no direct line to Ohrid, but you can take a train to Bitola and then catch a bus for the final leg of the journey. Once you arrive, Ohrid’s compact size makes it easy to navigate on foot, so we would not recommend renting a car as this could be a waste of money. Local taxis or boat rides can help you explore nearby attractions along the lake. We took a bus from Skopje Main Bus Stations to Ohrid - tickets range from approximately 13 to 15 euros. You are able to pre-book these via GetByBus or you are able to purchase on the day from the station.
RELAX BY THE LAKE
No visit to Ohrid would be complete without spending time at Lake Ohrid. You can relax by the water, take a boat ride, or explore its tranquil beaches. The lake is so pristine that it’s often compared to Switzerland’s lakes, but with far fewer tourists. Grab a book, a towel and some suncream and head to one of Ohrids' many beaches or jetties. There are plenty of beaches and spots you choose from when relaxing at the lake, but our favourite was Labino Beach, a smaller, secluded beach located just around the corner from The Church of Saint John, or either Gradiste Beach or Kaneo Beach.
EXPLORE THE OLD TOWN AND BAZAAR
Wander through Ohrid’s charming Old Bazaar and Old Town to get a feel for its rich history. With its cobblestone streets, centuries-old houses, and small artisan shops, the Old Town is a beautiful place to explore on foot. The perfect place to explore the shops and pick up some souvenirs - Don’t forget to stop for a coffee and/or baklava at one of the cafes that line the lake, many of them offer stunning views and an authentic local experience.
VISIT THE CHURCH OF SAINT JOHN
Arguably one of the most iconic sites in Ohrid, the Church of St. John at Kaneo is perched on a cliff overlooking the lake. Its stunning location makes it a photographer’s paradise, and its 13th-century architecture and frescoes are a testament to the area’s rich religious heritage. Watching the sunset here is an unforgettable experience. This is also by far the best photo spot in the whole of Ohrid so be sure to take your camera.
SAMUELS FORTRESS
A visit to Samuel's Fortress offers a journey through Ohrid’s medieval history. Standing proudly over the town, the fortress provides panoramic views of the city and Lake Ohrid. You have to pay a small fee to enter, but once inside you can walk along its well-preserved walls, check out the views and see the fortress’s strategic importance in centuries past. It’s especially beautiful during golden hour when the sun casts a warm glow over the town.
STROLL ALONG THE BOARDWALK
Ohrid’s boardwalk is a picturesque pathway that stretches along the shores of Lake Ohrid. You can get onto the boardwalk from different points and it offers breathtaking views of the sparkling water and surrounding mountains. It’s the ideal spot for a leisurely stroll and to choose from one of the charming waterfront cafes and restaurants offering delicious traditional and mediterranean cuisine.
VISIT SOME OF OHRIDS FAMOUS CHURCHES
Ohrid was once known as the “Jerusalem of the Balkans” due to the sheer number of churches that once dotted its landscape—reportedly, there were 365 churches, one for every day of the year. Today, Ohrid is still home to a remarkable number of these churches, each with its own unique charm and historical importance. One of the best churches to visit is the Church of Saint John (mentioned above), perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking Lake Ohrid. Another must-see is the Church of Saint Sofia, a 10th-century structure with beautiful frescoes that offer a glimpse into the town's Byzantine past. The Church of Saint Panteleimon is also noteworthy, with its impressive mosaics.
Lake Ohrid offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit every type of traveller, whether you're seeking luxury, comfort, or a more budget-friendly stay. Along the lake's picturesque shoreline, you’ll find a variety of hotels, boutique guesthouses, and lakeside resorts, many of which offer stunning views of the water and surrounding mountains. For those looking for a more authentic experience, there are charming family-run lodges and Airbnb rentals nestled in the Old Town or near quieter beaches. The town also has several budget-friendly options, from hostels to simple guesthouses. We stayed in this Airbnb offering beautiful views over the lake and only a short walk into town. The apartment was located only a stones throw away from the Church of Saint John and the hosts were very welcoming and provided us with lots of information on what to do and where to go. We would definitely recommend staying here if you can.
PIZZA VIA SACRE
This was our favourite spot in the whole of Ohrid. Pizza Via Scare is a cozy and popular spot offering a delicious variety of Italian-inspired cuisine in a relaxed, casual setting. Located near the heart of the town, it’s a favorite among locals and visitors alike. The menu features a wide range of pizzas, pastas, to more unique creations with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. The restaurant’s cozy atmosphere, friendly service, and outdoor seating with views of the lake and stunning church nearby make it the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing.
KAJ KANEVCHE
Kaj Kanevche is a charming lakeside restaurant in Ohrid, known for its exceptional setting and delicious local cuisine. Located on the shore of Lake Ohrid, it offers breathtaking views of the water and surrounding mountains, creating the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing meal. The restaurant specializes in traditional Macedonian dishes, with a focus on fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. From grilled meats and fresh fish to hearty stews and homemade bread, Kaj Kanevche serves up authentic flavors that will transport you straight to the heart of the region. Its laid-back vibe, friendly service, and beautiful outdoor seating make it an ideal spot for both lunch and dinner, especially if you’re looking to enjoy a peaceful meal while taking in the stunning lake views.
KANEO RESTAURANT
Kaneo Restaurant in Ohrid is a hidden gem that offers a memorable dining experience with breathtaking views of Lake Ohrid and the Church of Saint John. Located just above the lake, this restaurant provides a perfect blend of traditional Macedonian cuisine and a stunning, tranquil atmosphere. With its cozy, outdoor seating area, guests can enjoy delicious dishes like fresh fish, grilled meats, and classic Macedonian specialties, all while taking in the beautiful scenery. The peaceful location, combined with impeccable service and a selection of local wines, makes Kaneo Restaurant a perfect spot for a relaxed lunch or a romantic dinner by the water.
