HOW DO I GET TO NORTH MACEDONIA?
To get to North Macedonia from the UK, the most convenient way is to fly into the country’s capital, Skopje. Wizz Air operate several direct flights per week from London Luton Airport to Skopje. Alternatively, airlines like Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa have flights with layovers in Istanbul or Frankfurt, respectively. The flight time from the UK to Skopje is around 3 hours 15 minutes. Once you arrive in Skopje, you can easily travel to other parts of North Macedonia by bus, taxi, or rental car.
WHEN TO VISIT NORTH MACEDONIA?
The best time to visit North Macedonia depends on the type of experience you’re looking for, but generally, spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are ideal. During these seasons, the weather is mild and pleasant, with warm temperatures perfect for exploring the country’s charming towns, hiking in the mountains, and enjoying the stunning lakes like Lake Ohrid. Summer (July and August) can be quite hot, but it’s a great time for outdoor activities. Winter (December to February) can be cold and snowy, especially in the mountains, making it a good time for winter sports in areas like Popova Shapka. However, for the most comfortable weather and vibrant atmosphere, spring and autumn are the prime seasons to enjoy all that North Macedonia has to offer.
IS IT SAFE TO VISIT NORTH MACEDONIA?
North Macedonia is considered a safe destination to visit. The country has a low crime rate, and most visits are trouble-free, particularly in tourist-friendly areas like Skopje, Ohrid, and Bitola. As with any travel, basic precautions should be taken, such as staying aware of your surroundings and keeping valuables secure, especially in crowded areas or on public transport. The locals are friendly and welcoming, and many people in tourist areas speak English, making communication relatively easy.
WHAT IS THE CURRENCY?
The currency in North Macedonia is the Macedonian denar (MKD). The denar is used for all transactions within the country, and although some businesses in tourist areas may accept euros, it's advisable to carry denars for most purchases. ATMs are widely available in cities and towns, where you can withdraw local currency, and credit cards are accepted in many establishments, particularly in larger cities.

During our time in Skopje, we opted for an Airbnb, located just off the main square, which was perfect. This area has plenty of things to do and see as well as local bars and restaurants. You will find many different options available all fairly reasonable pricing. We paid around £35 per night.

However, because it lies in one of Europe’s least-visited countries, it remains a hidden treasure, largely untouched by mass tourism. Visitors can explore its UNESCO-listed old town at a leisurely pace, enjoying the tranquility of the lake and the rich cultural heritage without the crowds and commercialization that often accompany such stunning destinations.
